Biennale Architettura 2018 / 16th International Architecture Exhibition
A particularly interesting and challenging project, we worked closely with Hall McKnight architectural practice, using their chosen materials to effectively construct this incredible installation at the prestigious La Biennale di Venezia 2018. Entitled Unique Instruments, Expectant Spaces, the project interpreted the exhibition theme of Freespace with a series of 5m-high timber verticals with vessels suspended on smaller pieces of wood below.
Visitors used a mirror to view the exteriors of the model held within the vessels through special apertures (openings), with the subsequent interior of each space visible on the outside of the vessel.
Our challenge was to ensure the weighty containers were structurally sound and capable of standing safely for the six-month exhibition. Once the construction process of their design was approved by Hall McKnight and structural engineers, we delivered an extremely quick turnaround on manufacture, with the installation ready for Venice in just two weeks.
“Our exhibit was designed with input and assistance from BPJ Group and our structural engineers, Elliott Wood. BPJ contributed significantly to the process of developing a design that could be pre-fabricated, transported to Venice and assembled in less than three days. The accuracy and quality of work produced in BPJ’s workshop and during installation in Venice, along with their ability to engage pro-actively in discussions relating to detail design issues, were critical to the success of the project.”
